New York turned into New Orleans as The Soul Rebels brought the funk to Brooklyn Bowl the first night of their weekend-long residency.

A full house awaited the eight-piece brass ensemble and the featured guest of the night. We were first treated to a killer disco set by XXXX which kept the energy and anticipation high as groovers entered the Bowl and finished their games in the alley.

The Soul Rebels hit the ground running with their set, featuring an hour of original songs that helped put them on the map in the South, and incredible covers of acts ranging from Bruno Mars to Kanye West. But, they saved the best for last with the introduction of their special guest of the night, the frontrunner of The Roots and one of the best MCs alive, Black Thought. Although their time together onstage was short, Thought was able to show the crowd why he is one of the most well-respected rappers in the scene with his effortless rhythm, cadence, and stage presence.

The Soul Rebels are no strangers to the New York scene, and we can’t wait for them to stop by again soon.
